Ethereum Drops 2% as Altcoins Bleed; Glamsterdam Next

Ethereum fell 2.12% Thursday as ETF outflows and weak structure pressure the $2,357 trap door. The Glamsterdam fork hits Hoodi testnet October 26.

October 22, 2026

Key Points

  • Ethereum dropped 2.12% to $2,402 Thursday, the weakest large-cap performer on the day, sitting 49% below its August 2025 all-time high of $4,946.
  • Large net outflows from spot ETH ETFs and concentrated fund transfers are driving selling pressure, with the $2,357 level the critical floor before a test of prior lows near $2,318.
  • The Glamsterdam upgrade forks Ethereum's Hoodi testnet on October 26 at 17:42 UTC — watch for a positioning move in ETH in the 48 hours preceding the event.

Ethereum is the weakest large-cap in crypto Thursday, down 2.12% to $2,402 while Bitcoin holds near flat — a divergence that is not a one-day anomaly but a persistent structural problem for ETH holders who have watched the asset fall 49.34% from its all-time high of $4,946 set August 24, 2025. The $2,357 level is the trap door. Below it, the prior low of $2,318 comes into view with nothing notable in between.

ETH Is Being Sold, Not Ignored

Thursday's price action is specific and directional. ETH printed a high of $2,518.86 and a low of $2,428.06 in the last 24 hours before CoinDesk's morning read landed at $2,402.53 — meaning the asset spent the session in a controlled decline, not a volatile flush. That is often the more bearish structure: disorderly drops attract dip buyers, while steady selling through a range suggests an informed seller working an exit. Spot ETH ETF outflows provide the institutional context. The funds snapped a five-day outflow streak Wednesday, but one day of reversal does not negate the trend that built it. Combined Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF products shed $986.3 million in net outflows through mid-October before the recent reversal, and the ETH side of that ledger carried disproportionate weight.
On-chain investigator Darcy's October 21 alert flagged approximately $16 million in USDT leaving addresses linked to Indian exchange CoinDCX, moving through a single TRON wallet before distributing toward Binance, OKX, and Gate. The largest single transfer was 15.82 million USDT. CoinDCX has stated this is not a new breach, and no confirmed theft has been reported. But unresolved on-chain anomalies of this size generate a specific kind of uncertainty that stiffens selling pressure across the ecosystem — particularly in a market where ETH is already the path of least resistance for risk reduction. Watch for freeze actions from the receiving exchanges, which would either confirm or defuse the concern within days.

The Altcoin Landscape: Winners Are the Exception

Bitcoin dominance at 59.53% is the summary statistic for the entire altcoin market right now. When the largest asset by market cap pulls that share of total crypto value, the rotation trade is not happening. Ethereum at approximately 10 to 11% dominance reflects a market that has been structurally underperforming relative to BTC for multiple months. The assets outperforming in this environment share a specific characteristic: they have idiosyncratic narratives that are independent of the broader risk-on cycle.
Zcash is the clearest example Thursday, gaining 2.4% to lead the top-12 gainers. The catalyst is specific: Qiao Wang of AllianceDAO has publicly added to his ZEC position on a quantum security thesis — the argument that zero-knowledge privacy coins with strong cryptographic foundations become more valuable as quantum computing advances threaten conventional encryption. That is a long-duration narrative attached to a short-duration price move, which is exactly the kind of setup traders can front-run before the thesis reaches broader audiences. Monero tells the same story with more price history behind it: XMR is near $645 and has more than doubled over the past year — the same period in which ETH has lost more than a third of its value. Privacy and cryptographic security are working. Proof-of-stake Layer 1 narratives are not.
The AERO situation requires a separate read. Aerodrome and Velodrome merged into a unified on-chain spot trading platform called Aero, with AERO swapping 1-for-1 and VELO converting at 1-for-0.044. AERO fell 6% Thursday, which is less a verdict on the merger's strategic logic and more a reflection of conversion mechanics and the general suppression of DeFi tokens when Bitcoin dominance is elevated. XRP at $1.34 is essentially unchanged, which in a down day for alts is its own form of relative strength — the Ripple regulatory resolution has created a floor for the asset that most altcoins do not have.

The Glamsterdam Setup and What Comes Next

The most actionable forward-looking event for ETH traders is the Glamsterdam upgrade, which forks the Hoodi testnet on October 26 at 17:42:48 UTC — four days from now. The upgrade includes two headline changes: EIP-7732, which moves the block auction mechanism into the consensus protocol layer, and EIP-7928. EIP-7732 specifically matters for validator economics and MEV capture, which touches the revenue model of every serious ETH staking operation. Testnet forks do not automatically produce price moves, but they do generate positioning activity in the 48 to 72 hours preceding them as traders speculate on mainnet timelines and protocol narrative momentum.
The regulatory backdrop adds another layer to ETH's medium-term setup. Starknet's proposed Ethereum exit — a governance signal that the ecosystem's scaling infrastructure may not stay tightly coupled to the base layer — won 93.52% support for further research in a recent vote. That is not a confirmed departure, but 93.52% is not a marginal result. If Starknet's research phase concludes that an independent chain is preferable, the ETH ecosystem loses one of its highest-profile Layer 2 narratives. The SEC's Regulation Crypto Assets comment period closing Tuesday with more than 100 submissions also matters for ETH specifically, since the asset's regulatory classification — commodity or security — remains one of the unresolved fault lines in U.S. crypto policy. The Blockchain Association's call to raise exemption thresholds and exclude airdrops indicates that the industry expects the rule to advance in some form.
The price level that defines ETH's next two weeks is $2,357. A hold there and a confirmed bounce sets up a retest of $2,477, with the Glamsterdam testnet event on October 26 providing a potential short-term catalyst for that move. A break below $2,357 before the fork removes the technical support and targets the prior low at $2,318, with limited natural demand visible below that level. The Glamsterdam date is a hard deadline for positioning decisions — traders who want exposure to any fork-related movement need to be in the trade before 17:42 UTC on Sunday.
