Crypto ETFs Bleed $151.5M in One Session

Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs shed $151.5M in a single session as institutional money exits ahead of September CPI. What traders need to know now.

October 13, 2026

Key Points

  • Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs combined for $151.5M in net outflows on October 12, with BlackRock's IBIT and iShares Ethereum Trust accounting for the bulk of the damage at $65.4M and $75.07M respectively.
  • Institutional sellers are positioning defensively ahead of Tuesday's September CPI print, which could reset Fed rate expectations and amplify or arrest the digital-asset exodus.
  • Watch the October 14 CPI release as the immediate binary catalyst — a hot number above consensus risks accelerating month-to-date Bitcoin ETF outflows beyond the current $451.8M tally.

Crypto ETF holders got hit from every direction on Monday. Bitcoin ETFs shed $65.4 million, Ethereum ETFs bled $85.4 million, and smaller altcoin funds added to the carnage — bringing combined net outflows across the digital-asset ETF complex to approximately $151.5 million in a single session, against a macro backdrop defined by a 10-year Treasury yield sitting at 5.19% and a CPI report due in less than 24 hours.

The Scale of the Retreat

The numbers demand context before they can be actioned. Monday's $65.4 million Bitcoin ETF outflow was not spread across the field — every dollar came from BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). That concentration matters. IBIT is the category's dominant vehicle, holding $66.3 billion of the $105.84 billion in total Bitcoin ETF net assets, roughly 63% of the entire market. When IBIT bleeds, it is not retail panic; it is institutional decision-making at scale. The fund's assets under management effectively function as the industry's sentiment gauge, and Monday's read was unambiguous.
The Ethereum side was worse in absolute terms. ETH ETFs posted $85.4 million in daily net outflows, marking their eighth consecutive outflow day this October. BlackRock again led the exit, pulling $75.07 million in a single session. Cumulatively, Ethereum spot ETFs still carry $13.17 billion in net inflows since launch, so the structural investment thesis has not collapsed — but the momentum has turned sharply negative. $634 million in value traded on the day, meaning liquidity was present; sellers simply overwhelmed buyers with conviction.
Zoom out to the weekly picture and the deterioration is even sharper. Bitcoin ETFs recorded net weekly outflows of $681.1 million for the week of October 5–9, their worst week since late June. Ethereum ETFs posted $542.1 million in weekly outflows — the largest single-week redemption figure since January. Month-to-date, Bitcoin spot ETFs have now accumulated $451.8 million in net outflows, effectively erasing a meaningful chunk of the $478.6 million in year-to-date net inflows that the category still clings to. That YTD cushion is shrinking by the session.

One Bright Spot in a Sea of Red

The exception to Monday's broad digital-asset selloff was narrow but worth noting: U.S. NEAR spot ETFs recorded $3.98 million in net inflows on October 12, driven entirely by the Bitwise NEAR ETF (NRR). The fund has now accumulated $75.38 million in historical net inflows, with total net assets sitting at $81.67 million. By the standards of this asset class, NRR is a small fund — but its ability to attract fresh capital on a day when Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs were hemorrhaging speaks to differentiated positioning among a subset of altcoin investors who are rotating into layer-one protocols with distinct utility narratives rather than exiting crypto altogether.
VanEck Solana ETF (VSOL) and the Zcash ETF (ZCSH) did not share NRR's momentum. VSOL recorded $699,800 in outflows, and ZCSH shed $1.66 million — modest in absolute size, but directionally consistent with the broader institutional retreat. Solana's ETF wrapper has struggled to attract sticky capital even as the underlying network maintains transaction volume; the ETF format alone does not manufacture demand when macro conditions favor risk-off positioning.
The altcoin ETF story also intersects this week with the structural closure news: Themes ETF Trust is liquidating thirteen funds, including several altcoin-linked leveraged products such as 2x Long Anthropic (ANUU), 2x Short Anthropic (ANDD), and 2x Long Nscale (NSUU). Trading on those products ceases October 19; no creation orders will be accepted after October 16. The graveyard of failed leveraged crypto and single-stock ETFs continues to expand as AUM thresholds prove unforgiving for novelty products that launched into favorable sentiment but could not sustain flows through the volatility cycle.

What Traders Watch Next

The single most important near-term catalyst for the entire crypto ETF flow picture is the September CPI release scheduled for October 14. The relationship is direct: a hotter-than-expected inflation print raises the probability of a more hawkish Federal Reserve posture, pushes real yields higher, and mechanically pressures risk assets including Bitcoin and Ethereum. With the 10-year Treasury already yielding 5.19% and the 2-year at 4.76%, the yield curve is already sending a restrictive signal. Any upside CPI surprise would reinforce that read and likely accelerate the institutional outflow trend that has now run for eight straight sessions in Ethereum and is building momentum in Bitcoin.
Grayscale's GBTC remains an important structural data point. The fund has now accumulated $27.94 billion in cumulative net outflows since its conversion to a spot ETF format — a persistent drain that reflects legacy holders exiting at every opportunity rather than new capital entering. GBTC's continued bleed sets a floor of negative flow pressure that the category must overcome with IBIT and competing products. At present, that offset is failing.
The level to watch on IBIT is not a price target but a flow threshold: if daily outflows from IBIT exceed $100 million on the October 14 session — the day of the CPI print — that would signal institutional selling has accelerated beyond Monday's already-significant $65.4 million and could push month-to-date Bitcoin ETF outflows to levels that erase the remaining year-to-date net inflow cushion entirely within days. Conversely, a benign CPI print — core month-over-month at or below the 0.2% consensus — could stabilize institutional sentiment and halt the eight-session Ethereum outflow streak. One data print, two very different outcomes. Traders have less than 24 hours to position.
