Bitcoin ETFs Pull $137M as BTC Drops to $79,810

BlackRock's IBIT captured $136M of Wednesday's $137.3M Bitcoin ETF inflow — even as BTC fell 1.50% on the Fed's hawkish hold at 3.75%–4.00%.

October 29, 2026

Key Points

  • BlackRock's IBIT absorbed $136M of the $137.3M total Bitcoin ETF net inflow on October 28, extending the group's winning streak to three consecutive sessions.
  • Bitcoin fell 1.50% to $79,810.94 after the Fed held rates at 3.75%–4.00% with two officials voting for an additional hike, pressuring risk assets even as institutional money flowed into spot ETFs.
  • Traders should watch whether midterm election results catalyze the BTC ETF inflow acceleration flagged by CryptoQuant's Ki Young Ju, and whether ETHA's $44.83M single-session outflow marks a turning point in Ethereum's $1.32B October bleed.

BlackRock's IBIT took in $136M on Wednesday — 99% of the entire Bitcoin ETF category's $137.3M net inflow — yet BTC still closed at $79,810.94, down 1.50%, after the Federal Reserve held rates at 3.75%–4.00% and two officials pushed for another hike. The divergence between institutional accumulation and price action is the defining tension in crypto markets right now, and it isn't resolving cleanly.

The Concentration Problem

Three consecutive sessions of net inflows sounds like a recovery narrative — and by one measure it is. Bitcoin spot ETFs have now accumulated $57.61 billion in cumulative net inflows since launch and hold approximately $104.88 billion in net assets. Those are not speculative numbers. That is a real, institutionalized capital base that did not exist 18 months ago. But the distribution of flows tells a more complicated story than the headline figure.
Of the eleven spot Bitcoin ETFs currently trading — IBIT, FBTC, ARKB, BTCO, EZBC, BRRR, HODL, BTCW, MSBT, GBTC, and BTC — ten posted exactly zero net flows on October 28. Bitwise's BITB collected a token $1.3M. Everything else went to BlackRock. That is not healthy broad-based institutional demand. That is one fund acting as the category's entire engine, with the rest of the field sitting idle. When IBIT has a bad day — and it will — there is no depth behind it to absorb the narrative damage.
The context makes this concentration more pointed. In the two sessions immediately preceding this three-day inflow streak, Bitcoin ETFs bled $773.5M in net outflows across October 22 and 23 alone. The reversal has been sharp, but the underlying breadth is thin. CryptoQuant founder Ki Young Ju noted publicly today that BTC ETF inflows have been near zero for most of 2026, yet Bitcoin is only down 7% year-to-date — an argument for relative resilience, but also a reminder that the demand catalyst traders have been waiting for has not yet materialized in sustained form. He is flagging post-midterm elections as the potential inflection point. That is a thesis worth tracking, not a certainty worth pricing in.

The Ethereum Divergence Is Getting Ugly

While Bitcoin's ETF story is one of concentrated strength, Ethereum's is one of accelerating institutional exit. Spot ETH ETFs recorded $21.41M in net outflows on October 28 — the third consecutive session of withdrawals — bringing the three-session total to $170.21M out. The breakdown: $88.58M on October 26, $60.22M on October 27, $21.41M on October 28. The pace is decelerating slightly, which is the one piece of mildly constructive data in an otherwise damaging trend.
The fund-level numbers inside that aggregate are striking. ETHA, BlackRock's Ethereum ETF, lost $44.83M on the day — the same issuer that captured $136M in Bitcoin flows in the same session. Fidelity's FETH ran in the opposite direction, attracting $18.78M. Grayscale's ETH fund added $3.62M, and MSSE brought in $1.02M. Total trading volume for spot ETH ETFs hit $480.72M, with ETHA leading at $317.75M despite the outflows — a reminder that high volume does not equal positive sentiment when it accompanies net redemptions.
The October damage for Ethereum ETFs has now reached $1.32 billion in net outflows through Tuesday. That puts the month on track to be the worst since November 2025. Since launch, cumulative net inflows stand at $12.55 billion against total net assets of $14.27 billion — the asset base has held, but the margin is thinning. The structural issue is that Ethereum lacks a clear near-term catalyst comparable to the post-midterm inflow narrative that Bitcoin bulls are using to frame a recovery. ETH has no equivalent of the "digital gold" institutional allocation argument that drives IBIT purchases. Ethereum's investment case is more complex, more technical, and currently less compelling to the allocators moving large dollars through these vehicles.
Solana ETFs compounded the altcoin ETF picture. October SOL ETF outflows have crossed $105M, with funds holding roughly $1.56 billion in net assets against cumulative net inflows of approximately $1.51 billion — meaning the category has now effectively wiped out its cumulative net inflow advantage. That is a meaningful deterioration in a very short window.

What Traders Watch Next

The Fed is the immediate macro anchor. The October 28 decision to hold at 3.75%–4.00% was expected, but the dissent — two officials voting for another hike — was not fully priced into crypto. Bitcoin's 1.50% decline to $79,810.94 on a day when ETFs were pulling in $137M of inflows illustrates how fragile the price support remains when the rate environment stays restrictive. If the November meeting produces another hold without dissent, that could provide the macro clearance BTC needs to reconnect with its ETF flow momentum.
The midterm election timeline is the second variable. Ki Young Ju's call for accelerating inflows post-midterms carries credibility given CryptoQuant's track record on on-chain analysis, but it is a directional call, not a timing one. Traders positioning ahead of that catalyst need a clear entry level — $79,810 is now the reference point from Wednesday's close, with $75,000 representing the next meaningful technical support if the Fed narrative continues to weigh.
For Ethereum, the critical number to watch is whether ETHA's daily outflow pace drops below $20M and sustains that level, or whether it re-accelerates toward the $44–$88M range seen earlier this week. A stabilization below $20M would suggest the acute liquidation pressure is exhausting itself. A re-acceleration would signal a structural rotation out of ETH and into BTC that could persist through year-end. The $14.27B net asset base for Ethereum ETFs provides a buffer, but another week at October's outflow pace would put that figure under visible pressure. Watch ETHA's daily flow data from SoSoValue on Friday — that will be the clearest early read on whether the three-session bleed is moderating or metastasizing.
